Cancer Research for Stage 1 Lung Cancer

The department hosts an active Lung Cancer Screening Program for current and former smokers to help detect lung cancer at its earliest stage, when treatment is most effective. The Vascular Surgery Program provides diagnostic evaluation, medical, endovascular and operative care to cancer patients and survivors with various forms of vascular disease. Description: This course will review the management of complex surgical oncology cases that involve major vascular structures.

The following vascular beds will be emphasized: Head and neck tumors, such as paragangliomas, involving the carotid artery; extremity soft tissue sarcomas involving the major extremity arteries and veins; retroperitoneal tumors adjacent to the major intraabdominal vessels including the aorta and inferior vena cava; Pancreatic tumors involving the portal vein and mesenteric arteries.

The course will include discussion of optimal preoperative imaging, ligation versus bypass, choice of optimal conduit, postoperative management including choice of antithrombotic agent. This course will be of interest to surgeons managing patients with a variety of benign and malignant neoplasms involving major vascular structures.

The department's robust minimally invasive surgery program is focused on reducing the pain and trauma associated with conventional open surgery.
